I Left The Spanish Village By The Sea For The City

That’s what they call the town we come from and that’s the name we gave to the instrumental song that opens our new record. Everyone went to a studio tonight where our pals The Deadnotes are recording. From what I could make out on the phone it sounded like a ruckus little party. Al tried to get me to come along but it’s seemed like a bigger bite than I could chew. Saying hello to lots of people at once can be overwhelming and often ends up in awkward high fives that missed their mark and calling people by the wrong names and strange half hugs. Id rather be one of the first to show at a party than to walk into one people have been at all night.

Valentines Day I went out to dinner with Caps. I think he had a fried fish sandwich and I got a tuna melt and we both had ice teas. At dinner I learned that Caps had never put sugar in his own ice tea before. I took a picture of him with Elvis to celebrate this milestone in his young life. We thanked Greek Pete for the meal and I bid farewell to Caps and headed up to Los Angeles to meet Alex and Lauren. The drive made my first drink my best. An ice cold beer after an hour on the freeway is as calm as a cold pillow at the end of a warm bed. We met at the Old Paps Blue Ribbon Brewery downtown ended up in our brother’s loft playing some records and having a few glasses of scotch before we went out. Good fortune smiled on me and I somehow lucked out with a young lady far out of my league as a date. The four of us ran a muck downtown bouncing around from bar to bar and running into all kind of friends. Alex and I drank scotch most of the night and happily accepted a round of tequilas from a new friend. The next day it seemed we didn’t appreciate the kind gesture as much as the night before.

Friday I rolled around in bed most of the day setting up pillows and sheets just right to block out the sunlight. A shower and a Sheppard’s pie brought me back to life and after dinner we headed to the hotel cafe to see our friend Emily Wells play. On the way we ran into our old friend Mikey and convinced him to miss the bus and come to the show with us. We toasted his recent engagement and his baby girl due in June. Emily was spectacular and really charmed the whole place. After the show as we headed back to the car we walked past a familiar bar where some friends worked and popped in for a night cap. Alex and his lady stuck to the plan and I on the other hand welcomed a handful of nightcaps and stayed behind to catch up with friends. I ended up back at my friend Taylor’s house and made a southwestern omelet before falling asleep during a party.

Saturday Taylor suggested a late morning brunch and everyone seemed to like the idea. Less than a hundred yards from his home a cafe' was empty between breakfast and lunch rush. The 7 of us quickly turned into 14 as more and more friends showed up to eat blueberry pancakes and French toast and drink bloody marys & mimosas. Our friend Blake ordered a screw driver and I suggested he try a Harvey Wall Banger and the drink quickly became a hit as everyone passed it around. Sooner than later we all had a few of our own and were doing our best Kennedy impressions. "foooourrr mo arrrr vyyyy wall bangas fa me n my men". Aaron met us and received good news about one of his new shows and this gave just reason to celebrate with a pool party up at his house. After brunch we headed up the hill to heat the pool invite over friends and get out of our clothes (it was day 3 for me of the same suit) and into some swim shorts. More good fortune came our way when we received a phone call informing us that we had been invited to London in March to celebrate a friends birthday. It was a golden day of splasing and lounging around the pool carelessly. Eventually I ended up on the couch with season six of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Shane Max and some of the other guy went out to see a band at the echo. Aaron and I stayed in and after a few hours on the couch I retired to my part-time room downstairs and fell asleep watching the Devils Advocate and had weird dreams about mental hospitals.

Sunday morning I figured id go home but as fate would have it that wasn’t the case. I woke up well rested and walked into the kitchen to find Shane had already made coffee which in my book is a close second to anything. We chilled out and chatted watched Family Guy smoked a few cigarettes and eventually Aaron woke up and we went out to lunch at the Crepe' place down the hill. We all got fajitas and Aaron re-enacted the "What Am I" YouTube video over and over again until we couldn’t laugh anymore. We took a trip downtown to recover my car and we decide to have a little get together to watch Aaron’s new show later that night. A quick stop at the store for drinks and things and we were back at the house and in the pool again. I think it was almost a 100 and the steam rose up into the lights and set a chilled out mood. We ordered pizzas that never came which worked out great cause they felt bad and gave them to us for free for coming down to pick them up. We watched the show "Breaking Bad" and I enjoyed cheering on my friend's great new accomplishment. A few games of pool later I decided to head home for the busy week that lye ahead. I said my goodbyes to good friends and looked forward to taking off the same suit Id been wearing for four days straight. On the drive home "Superstition" came on the radio and I again realized what an insane song that is. It felt good to sleep in my own bed and hang out with my brother.

Monday morning I got to work on band affairs. Mainly preparing for the release of the new record. After a French press worth of coffee and some catching up with the family Alex and Caps picked me up for a band meeting to finalize all the album stuff. Wulff cooked up some steaks and we drank some wine and took care of what needed taking care of. The album comes out May 13th and is lovingly titled "You'll Never Understand This Band The Way That I Do". (This is meant to be taken from a personal point of view of course) We have a small show on the books Feb.25th next week at the Silverlake Lounge where we will play the new record, nearly in its entirety. Then its up to Santa Cruz for a gig and possibly a few house parties. Its all free so come hang out hear some new tunes and have a good time.
