A lot can happen in a months time
Hello my Dears,
Been awhile since I last wrote, my apologies. Lets see what has happend since we last spoke... Hummmm, well quite a lot really, our album came out for starters (7.22), we played some great shows including a sold out record release party at the Troubadour (THANKS very much to those of you who made it out for that), a sold out show supporting the great Albert Hammond Jr. at Spaceland as well as a nice trip to Las Vegas for a record release celebration with our friends out there. We have also shot two new videos for the new album this past month."Savior & "La Costa Verde". My very talented older brother and his friends shot "Savior" and our gifted pal "Jack Coleman" and his crew did "La Costa Verde". I am excited to say the man who shot and is editing the "Savior" video also has the new Bond film "Quantum Of Solace" on his resume. I'm betting it is going to look pretty ace. Expect to see the new videos sometime this month. Since putting out this new album their have been so many wonderful people in our corner lending their support, so many people to thank, my goodness... All of you who went out and bought the album and told your friends to check it out as well as the good people at College and Indie radio stations all over North America who have been playing the new tunes. All the great bands who have had us open for them and the bands that have supported us these past few months ( Hot Hot Heat, Albert Hammond Jr.,Emily Wells, Eastern Conference Champions). Its been a pleasure doing business with ya.
Cool things coming up; We play this Sunday Aug.10th at our home town festival with our good buds Delta Spirit & Dawes. We play for Jack Colemans art show at Detroit Bar Aug.23rd and we are back at The Roxy with Dusty Rhodes and The Riverband on Sep.3rd. For more info on those gigs head to the bands myspace page. www.myspace.com/theshysmusic
You may be wondering where the tour dates are??? Hang tight,we've got a lot in the works right now and in the next coming weeks we should have it sorted. We are going to try and get around the US at least a few times this year as well as a trip to the UK.
What else can I tell you, oh YES! Believe it or not we are already writing songs for the next album. Everyones got a lot of tunes and when we find the time we will probably begin recording again between shows and all the other engagements. Unless I am forgetting something thats pretty much it for now. Y'all come back now ya hear.
Au revoir

New News
Hello Friends,
The band has been running around ragged as of late promoting and basically just gearing up for the release of their second full length LP ("You'll Never Understand This Band The Way That I Do" 7.22.08) To follow up the brilliant Vern Moen "She's Already Gone" video there are two new videos being shot this month by some very gifted folks. (more on that very soon) The band just finished off a local residency last month in their hometown and played the first ever Sunset Strip Music Festival with Hot Hot Heat to a sold out crowd at the Roxy. A couple of early reviews of the new record and singles have started to pour in and the feedback is phenominal. Check out what the first to hear it are saying.
The Shys second full-length release, You'll Never Understand This Band The Way That I Do is a winner. It is a fascinating mix of 60's British psychedelia, 70's pub rock and indie-punk channeled through the vision of a young southern-California band.
The band makes a bold move by starting the album with a mid-tempo instrumental (not the typical Side 1, Track 1) which features both a violin and glockenspiel. One needs to listen to the whole album to really appreciate the depth of the band's songwriting abilities. Across this disc, the band embraces a variety of musical styles that range from The Beatles' psychedelia-era (Revolver and the White Album), Nicky Hopkins-era Rolling Stones (Exile on Main Street and Goats Head Soup) and pub/roots-rock (The Kinks/Dr. Feelgood).
The standout tunes are on this disc are "Savior", "She's Already Gone", "Find Some Courage". All of which have a sort of a John Lennon vibe but singer Kyle Krone makes these tunes his own. Kyle Krone has a great voice that matches the band's style of music as his delivery ranges from John Lennon-ish fuzzed-out psychedelia to world-weary Mick Jagger-style blues (on "Mercy" and "Brother Please")- Brooklyn Rocks NYC Music Blog
The Shys
"The Hangman"
They've taken a leap forward as far as sound and songwriting are concerned, which is nice. More importantly though, they're still having fun. I think it's great how the guitar riffs are as big and loud and possible and I really love the way the guys revert to the number's sing-a-long worthy chorus as much as possible in its three-minute runtime. Grab a beverage and turn this baby up so the neighbors can hear it.-Side One Track One

"She's Already Gone"
I’ve listened to it loads this weekend and it’s really good. This song is Mott The Hoople meets Oasis while hanging out with The Band. Sorta- Classic Rock Magazine

Music Video
Location- April 8th 2008 the five of us Shys took a short drive up the road to a place we consider our second home, The Ramos House Cafe in the historic Los Rios district of San Juan Capistrano. Its a part of town where I spent the better part of my childhood growing up and have many fond memories of the entire district. In 2004 the hand of fate intervined and we met the mastermind behind The Ramos House Cafe (John Q). He gave both Alex and I jobs at his place and we quickly realized we had a lot of common interest, perhaps the most common of them being music. The job he offered me was working in the garden looking after the home grown herbs and vegatables that they use in meals at the cafe. This job apealed to me for many reasons, I was outside, alone, in the garden listening to good music and free to take smoke breaks. So a few days a week from the early morning to the late afternoon we would spend our time working and listening to a heathly dose of Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, among many others. Sometimes we wouldn't work at all and we would sit around on the porch sipping pints, playing and talking about records. As the band became more busy Alex and I eventually stopped working at The Ramos but we really never left, in fact we started hanging around more than ever. John and all our friends at the resteraunt became very near and dear to our hearts and we could think of no better place to shoot the video than the place where we spend most of our free time natrually. Other locations in the video include the San Juan Mission and the petting zoo. For more information on The Ramos House visit www.ramoshouse.com

LIGHTSPEED !!! Coachella
a play by play if you will...
Thursday- After one day of relaxing at home and taking a break from what has been a non stop sorta month Wulff called and said something to the effect of "hey man! what are you doing? lets go to coachella, we have a house." me "yes OK good lets go, I'll pack my swim suit". I packed a quick bag of what was clean and Wulff and I got in the car and Riley followed us as we drove through wine country and the mountains (basically the back way) to the house in La Quinta (less than a mile from the festival) that we felt so grateful to have for the weekend. We hit the store to stock the fridge and make sure we had enough goods to host at least a few BBQ's. Oddly enough the first thing we did when we arrived to the house was go for a quick round of golf. Just one hole, a par 5 I believe. It was very enjoyable and even more strange we all did a half decent job of it. The pool was perfectly desert heated and the incredible back drop of the golf course palm trees and silhouetted mountains made the sunset picture perfect as we ate our dinner. Afterwards we had plans to attend the annual Coachella kick off party at the nearby yatch club with some friends. Courtesy of our friends we drove right up to the party and were ever so easily ushered in through the back door. Does It Offend You?Yeah were Deejaying the party and Chris's Dad Willie (whom if you haven't met is basically a legend)hit it off with everyone. It really was a proper kick off party and we all enjoyed our free drinks by the water and catching up with old friends. Our new friend Simon so kindly sorted us out with artist passes for the weekend. When we got home that night Alex had just arrived and after a quick dip in the pool we called it a night.
Friday- I woke up to the phone ringing and Alex answered, on the other line was good news. Friends were headed down for a pool party/bbq and it was clearly the perfect setting for it. It was nice in the sun if you were in the pool but most of us preferred the shade and a cold beverage. Wulff cooked I made pitchers of margaritas and as the sun was dying down we decided to head over to the festival to catch some bands and meet some friends. We opted to take the golf cart and our drive took a little longer than expected. Jason our buddy from NYC was ejected from his spot on the back of the cart but managed to somehow hang on as his feet moved at a Fred Flinstone speed and we all laughed and Chris eventurally slowed down long enough for him to hop back on. Finally we arrived safely and we wondered around backstage and elsewhere checking out some music and meeting some nice interesting people. We watched The Raconteurs put on a pretty rad set that made it feel like it was 1976. It's always nice to hear a good loud rock n' roll band at a festival. Next up was The Verve whom we have been fans of for years and never seen live largely due to the fact the last time they played live I was probably 12. The band came on to David Axelrod's tune "Holy" and a lot of anticipation was in the air. I always imagined that they must be brilliant live. The stage was all lit up with cool looking lights and Richard Ashcroft came out from the darkness and shouted "This Is Music" and the band kicked in to the tune and from start to end it was one of the best live shows we've seen in a long time.
Saturday- Coffee and breakfast put us back in the game pretty quickly and we had the gang over for another pool party BBQ. Brandon (Delta Spirit) came out and met us with his lady and even more friends from all over showed up. Our buddy Jeff came out from San Diego and brought his amazing RV which became a real ace up our sleeve. We drank margaritas, floated around the pool, ate and enjoyed each others company and eventually headed over to the festival. I personally didn't watch much music this day but I did catch most of Portishead who was pretty rad and Alex saw Mark Ronson and said it was ace. We missed Cold War Kids and MGMT went on too early. At some point everyone ended up on top of an RV watching Prince. We somehow got lost on the ride home in the RV but it was somehow more fun to be lost than home. I never hit energy drinks but to stay awake through the long day I drank about three red bulls and didn't notice anything strange until I layed down to fall asleep and my heart was pounding. Brandon his gal and I all fell asleep squeezed into the same bed and they woke up early to head back to Long Beach. I was still in bed when Brandon texted saying he was home and moving boxes in the sun.
Sunday- A nice lazy sunday. Took a ride on the cart around the golf course and sipped some cold beverages. Got a little antsy and we made our way to the festival early this day. We wanted to catch Does It Offend You ? Yeah. After surving the hear and dust all day we were pleased to see the sun going down. We caught about 30 minutes of Roger Waters set and the best thing about it was hearing Wulffs Dad talk about 1979. I'm a Pink Floyd fan but most of the stuff he was playing was really pretty borining. A few classic tunes were great but no one wants to hear the solo stuff and without David Gilmour its just not the same. Knowing this was our last night I couldn't in good conscience just go home so our friend Larissa brilliantly organized vans to transport us around to after parities. I Sat in a jacuzzi for about 3 hours and hung out with friends and had a relaxing night for the most part.
Monday- I stayed over at our friends hotel but really did very little sleeping, I made myself a little bed on the ground out of pillows and passed out for a couple hours and had to wake up and head back to the house. I got a cab back , sorta got lost and ended up walking about a mile in the sun. I must have looked like hell to all the senor citizen golf crowd as I staggered down the street in a festival beaten black suit and slippers. As soon as I got back I felt better and got in the pool. It was time to go back home. We stopped for coffee, stopped for sandwiches and stopped because we ran out of gas in the fast lane and ended up on the side of the freeway off ramp one exit from our house. Must be God's way of humbling us. Eventually we were rescued and back home for a quick nap and then headed up to the Detroit Bar for our the last night of our month long residency. Alex and I slept in the van until a few minutes before we were meant to be on stage. We got up there and gave what we had left to give and got off stage looking like we just climbed out a swimming pool. I said good night to all our friends from New York who came out and my brother took me home made me grilled cheese and I very happily fell asleep.

Last week tried to kill me but I survived
4-07
1st night of the Detroit Bar residency. Being in a big rush before a show is really a bad move so we packed up nice and early and went to the pool to swim around for a bit and lay in the sun. That turned out to be a really good move and everyone felt properly chilled out on the way to the club. After soundcheck we watched Kansas win the final four game in overtime and Greg from ECC won some $kratch on that. We hung around played pool met and chatted with friends as the night progressed. Eastern Conference Champions played a gorgeous set as a duo and we celebrated Josh's birthday.(I LOVE YOU MAN!) By the time we went on all our friends and some family were in attendance which made for a enjoyable set. D.Spirit was back in town so naturally it was good to see our bros and Brandon decided to spend the week with us in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. bat planned on coming but to no ones suprise slept in to late.
4.08
Brandon and I fell asleep watching Lord Of War after the show and woke up semi early to get ready for Vegas. We hit some tea, a few cigarettes, packed up a couple suits and the band picked us up around noon. The drive out was lots of laughs and virtually painless. We saved our stop at Mad Greek for the way home and got to the hotel with time to spare. As a band if you can ever stay where you play than you are stoked on life because it saves you the trouble of all kinds of nonsense. The club was inside the hotel we were staying so after loading in we simply took the elevator to our rooms cleaned up and relaxed before heading to the hotel bar and meeting up with some friends who met us in Vegas. We did an interview took some photos and watched our old buddies Satisfaction open the show and they sounded good as ever. We got on stage around midnight and after the show we ran all over the casino playing roulette and black jack and eventually everyone ended up downtown. We had a good group of close friends and family sitting around a fire enjoying each others company and the insane city that Las Vegas is. Time doesnt seem to exist out there and after what seemed like only a couple hours I looked down at my phone to see it was actually 6am and probably time to get some sleep. Brandon and I stumbled back to our room slammed a vitiman water and passed out in these really comfortable beds.

To our suprise everyone woke up feeling refreshed and we decided to cruise down to the bar for a mimosa and then to the pool for lunch and some cold drinks. It was a beautiful day and and the town seemed nearly deserted. We enjoyed the afternoon and made a few phone calls to arrange to stay for another night which made everyone happy. A few pina coldas later and a stint in the hot tub and everyone felt amazing and rejuvenated for a second night in town. Through some friends we managed to get a reservation at Michael Mina's resteraunt in Mandalay Bay. Most of us got ready and headed down there and before to long we were enjoying fine wine and some of the best food we'd ever eaten in our lives. Luckily some of us had done well at the tabels earlier that day or we would have been eating at the buffet once again. Completly full we headed back to our hotel to meet the rest of the guys and make one last night of it before heading back home the next afternoon. The people at the club we played invited us back with the promise of free drinks and that was all it took for us to say yes. Very kindly they gave us our own section and a few bottles to share amongst friends. A couple drinks into the evening we noticed an unfamilar after taste from our drinks and asked the waitress if we were drinking some rare vodka we'd never heard of. To our suprise we quickly learned that the ice was soaking in Absinthe and that's what was giving the drinks an almost licorce after taste. Before to long the club was closing up and we headed out into the casino to try our luck at the tabels. A friend of ours that came with us couldnt lose at Roulette and with what little money I had it seemed good luck was upon me and it made for an even better trip. Basically we spent the rest of the our night having as much fun as possible and amazingly doing it for free.

Packed up, late check out, and we were out of town. Stopped at the Mad Greek for a milk shake and I even drove part of the way home. The drive seemed to take forever and seeing the van pull up to my house was the best thing I'd seen all day. Brandon and I cooked a pizza chilled out on the couch and passed out watching that film "25th Hour".

Leaving for LA from Orange County at 3:30pm. on any week day is basically walking straight into the lions den doing it on a friday is the 7th circle of hell. Sure there is the toll road but that is just a momentary break from the un-relelnting traffic of the 405 N. I tried to sleep in the back of the van but that was useless with the sun shining so bright in through the windows. Our load in at the club was 6pm and somehow we made it in time. The club we were playing had a huge flight of stairs and no elevator. I wondered in the back of my mind if this was the price to pay for having so much fun in the desert. The weather cooled off the gave us some cold pints and everything was cool as we waited to go on stage. Sometimes it is really nice to go on early to avoid waiting around the whole night. Alex and Riley went over to the bar at the staples center to watch the Lakers destroy the Hornets and the rest of us walked back and forth from our dressing room to the outside patio for a couple hours killing time eating drinking and smoking some cigarettes. 9pm. showtime. A few hundred people gathered to watch the band as we played through a set comprising of the new and the old tunes. When you open for someone "bigger" than you, more often than not they have a crew of at least 3 guys and somehow one of them is always British and in there 40's. These guys usually want to get you on and off stage as quick as possible and this night was no exception. No time for a soundcheck just a quick line and bang off ya go. I had no idea how the show was going as we jammed through about 9 tunes. The lights were to bright to see anybody but those in the front row and the sound on stage was all drums. After the set we laughed about the sound on stage and didn't really know for sure if the show was any good. To our pleasant suprise we had never had so many people tell us how incredible the sound was out front in the auidence. So I guess we did alight and after the show we headed to 7th and Grand downtown to meet friends and family for a nightcap before heading home to relax for the weekend. It feels like summer again doesnt it ?
